One of the largest manufacturing operations in oilfield equipment and the premier provider of tubing anchor solutions are now one company.
TechTAC® has acquired the assets of Shawnee, Oklahoma-based Oilfield Equipment & Manufacturing, more commonly known as OEM, from Kattula Holdings, which has exited the business. For many years OEM has been an integral part of the TechTAC supply chain, manufacturing a wide variety of tubing anchor catchers and related parts. Now, working together as one company, TechTAC and OEM will be even better positioned to support TechTAC customers with top-quality downhole tools that are available when and where they need them.
The TechTAC-OEM partnership began in 2011. At that time and for the next several years, OEM was the company’s primary manufacturer of tubing anchor parts for both its Slimline® TACs and standard anchors. When TechTAC opened its in-house machine shop near Salt Lake City in 2016, some of that manufacturing work was transitioned, but OEM remained a vital component of the manufacturing operations supporting TechTAC. In 2022, TechTAC began directing the day-to-day operations of OEM, and this month’s acquisition makes that partnership complete.
Supporting the Oil Patch
In addition to producing anchor components for TechTAC, OEM’s manufacturing capacity and expertise will continue to be available to other vendors and suppliers in the oil patch. Since it was founded in 1983 by military veteran Dennis Marshalla (who passed away in 2017), OEM has produced a broad range of downhole parts and products for upstream oil and gas applications. These include many subsurface pump parts, such as traveling and standing valves, traveling plunger assemblies, hardline cages and patent valves, as well as packer parts, and much more.
“OEM has been a vital part of TechTAC’s business for several years now,” said TechTAC Owner and CEO Brad Crist, “so making their talented and experienced team of machinists a permanent part of TechTAC was the right move for our customers. While this acquisition helps protect our supply chain – and in turn our Authorized Dealers who count on TechTAC for top-quality American-made products and fast delivery – it also supports the broader oil industry. Having served the oil patch for more than 40 years, OEM will continue to be a manufacturing resource for oil equipment vendors for years to come.”
Welcome to Shawnee
To celebrate the new combined company, Crist and other members of the TechTAC team met with the OEM staff to officially welcome them as TechTAC employees, answer questions, and most importantly … grill steaks.
There was some debate about whether Crist, being from Utah, could actually grill beef up to Oklahoman standards. In the image below, TechTAC Sales Manager Chad Mosier is seen expressing the group’s concerns. However, Crist was not deterred, and after tasting the steaks, the consensus among the Sooners was that he acquitted himself quite well.
The OEM facility – which will remain at its current location and continue to use the OEM name – is an expansive shop that features a dozen CNC mills and lathes, including 3-axis turning up to 24″ in diameter and 60″ in length, and 4th axis and 5th axis milling capabilities. The team has decades of combined experience machining parts from carbon and stainless steel, bronze and exotic metals.
