Right-Hand Set Option Now Available for Slimline Full Bore TAC

Slimline Full Bore right-hand set anchors in a row

As the popularity of the patent-pending Slimline® Full Bore Tubing Anchor Catcher (TAC) continues to spread, TechTAC® has responded to customer requests by creating a right-hand set option for the innovative 5.5″ anchor.

Rig crews set most mechanical tubing anchors using a left-hand (counterclockwise) rotation. However, sometimes well geometry makes a left-hand set anchor impractical. The well may include deviations or other obstacles that are difficult to navigate without rotating the tubing anchor. And those rotations can cause the anchor to prematurely set. For those instances, TechTAC has created a right-hand set version of its newest anchor.

Like other TechTAC products, the red color (as opposed to traditional blue) identifies the right-hand set model.

The Need for a Full Bore Slimline TAC

For years the original Slimline TAC has helped engineers and operators improve efficiency and lower lifting costs. The product provides up to 245% more flow-by area than a standard B2 TAC. However, in the past, if a 5.5” well were using 2-7/8” tubing to support a large pump, engineers would have to place a Slimline TAC below the seat nipple because of the anchor’s reduced ID.

The new Slimline Full Bore TAC combines a full bore ID (2.4” on the 5.5” anchor) with a slim OD. This combination allows engineers to place the tubing anchor catcher above the seat nipple in 2-7/8” tubing with a large pump running through it.

Adding a Right-Hand Set Option

Virtually all of TechTAC’s Slimline anchors offer the option of a right-hand set model. That includes the patented Slimline® QuickSet™ TAC, which can be fully set in just 1-to-3 turns. Traditional mechanical TACs require 6-to-8 rotations.

The Slimline Full Bore TAC is currently available for 5.5″ casing. Plans for a 7.0″ version are under development. However, the original Slimline TAC and the Slimline QuickSet TAC product lines include both traditional and right-hand set versions for 5.0″, 5.5″, 6.0″, 7.0″ and 7.625″ wells.

Customer Success with the Slimline Full Bore TAC

One Slimline Full Bore TAC customer saw significant improvements in three mature wells after running the new anchor. According to a production superintendent, “We have had good luck with the Slimline Full Bore TACs so far. They work well for gas interference issues in our wells…. We’ve seen a 25% to 30% increase in the volume of gas being discharged on the surface.”

Pump fillage, based on dynamometer data, and daily production were also improved. “We have seen increased pump fillage on wells we converted to the Slimline Full Bore TAC. Increases of 15% to 25% are common,” the superintendent added. “[And] all three wells went from producing roughly 40 barrels per day to approximately 80 barrels per day – a 100% increase.”

Though the results of deploying the Slimline Full Bore TAC will vary depending on the unique circumstances of each well, the anchor gives engineers new flexibility as they design downhole tool strings.
