Most tubing anchor catchers are designed to support wells with 4.5” to 7.0” casings, plus the occasional 7-5/8” variety. However, it’s not uncommon for certain well conditions to necessitate a larger tool string. These wells may require oversized tubing anchors, including 8-5/8” TACs.
Some of the most common reasons wells are designed with larger casings and tool strings include:

- High-Volume Wells – High fluid production rates may need a larger tubing size.
- High Axial Loads – Larger anchors may be needed when the tubing string is exceptionally heavy, as in deep or high-pressure wells.
- Specialized Completions – Some completions, such as thermal recovery wells or high-pressure gas injection, require large-diameter casing to accommodate expansion, flow volume and tool string access.
- Well Longevity & Workover Flexibility – Larger casing programs are sometimes chosen to extend the life of a well, anticipating future workovers or recompletions that may require larger tubing.
The Availability of Oversized Tubing Anchors
Larger anchors can be difficult to source. Most manufacturers consider them custom order products with lead times that can extend up to six months. Those delays can have a significant impact on production timelines for larger wells. Other vendors choose to source and manufacture them outside the United States. This approach can lead to inferior-quality products, in addition to lengthy delays.
TechTAC Now Offers 8-5/8” TACs

As the industry’s premier tubing anchor solution provider, TechTAC® offers a wide range of high-quality, American-made downhole tools. These include the innovative Slimline® TAC, quick-setting anchors, standard B2 anchors and many others, across multiple sizes.
TechTAC’s product suite now also includes oversized tubing anchors, specifically 8-5/8” standard TACs (with 9-5/8” TACs planned for later this year). Like all of TechTAC’s products, these anchors are manufactured and assembled in the United States using high-quality steel. While we can’t promise shipment or delivery within 24 hours, as we do with most of our tubing anchors, we are keeping a limited quantity of 8-5/8” TACs in inventory, to meet customer needs as quickly as possible. Larger orders may require additional lead time, but that lead time is usually counted in days, not months.
